Men's 40 + Softball: This program begins its fourth season this April. Play goes from April to June. Games are scheduled for Sundays at 11:30am at the Borough Park and Brookside Community Club Field. Each team is responsible for paying a league fee to cover the cost of equipment and umpires. To register an individual or team contact Daryl Brewster 543-0512 or the Recreation Department.


Volleyball Program: The first set of clinics will be offered on Monday evenings, during April at the Middle School. This program will be open to girls in 5th- 8th grades. More clinics will be offered in the Fall. For more information on this new program call the Township Recreation Office at 543-7301.


Swim Team participates in the North Jersey Regional Lake League. It is open to children 5-18 years. The team practices every weekday morning and encourages fun as well as competitive swimming. Swim meets are held twice weekly on Wed evenings and Sat. mornings. To register contact the Recreation Department.

SWIM TEAM FEES: If you are a member of the beach, swim team registration is $25.00 per child/ $50.00 maximum per family. If you are not a member of the beach, the fee is $50.00/per child, $100.00/maximum per family.

Township Recreation Programs

The Township sponsors a variety of recreation programs throughout the year.  The programs are offered to Mendham Township and Borough residents.   Information about these programs can be obtained by contacting the Township Department of Recreation at 543-7301.  A listing of programs and activities scheduled for the year 2000 is outlined below.


GENERAL PROGRAMS

Running Club: The Town and Country Running Club was formed in 1998 and meets and runs together year round. They also enter road races together. The Club meets for a short 3-5 mile run on Saturdays and a longer run 6-10 miles on Sunday. More information is also available through Karin Lehr 895-3421.

Mad Science Program:  Mad Science is a Township Department of Recreation sponsored program designed to teach children about science through fun, games and experiments.  Sessions are held throughout the year and the program is open to children 1st-5th grade.  Each session is 8 weeks, and the curriculum changes every session. Cost for the program varies by session.  For more information, contact the Township Department of Recreation.

Family Skate Program: The Township Department of Recreation sponsors an annual Family Skate at the Mennen Area in Morris Township. The skate takes place the third Friday in March. Pizza and skating is included.

Miscellaneous Trips: Annual trips include: NJ Devils, Dorney Park, Deep Sea Fishing. See the recreation calendar for information on these and other upcoming events.

Ice Skating: There is skating (weather permitting) at the Brookside Beach Pond. Hours and rules are posted at the gate. A green flag means skating is allowed - a red flag means the ice is not safe and, therefore, no skating is allowed. Call the Mendham Township Department of Recreation for more information.  There are also two facilities in the Mendham Borough; the Pond at Mountain Valley Park and the Coventry Pond in Deer Ridge.   Residents interested in using these facilities should contact Mendham Borough for futher information at 543-7152.


WINTER PROGRAMS

Bowling: The Pastime Club maintains four bowling lanes which are open to the public. Many local leagues bowl at the newly-renovated Pastime Lanes and are always looking for new bowlers. Women’s leagues bowl during the day and on Monday evenings. Men’s leagues bowl on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and there is a mixed league that plays on Friday evenings. Beginning in Janaury, high school and middle school leagues will alternate Wednesday evenings. The lanes can be rented by the hour for children’s or adult parties; bumpers are available for the youngsters. During January, February, and March, there is open bowling every Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00pm. For more information, call Steve Swiencki at 543-6631 (lanes) or 543-7281 (home).

 

Youth Basketball:

Patriot Recreation Basketball: This basketball program sign-ups are in early October and the season goes from December to March. Boys and girls play on separate teams. The 5th and 6th graders play at Mountainview and the 7th and 8th graders play at the Township Middle School.

Youth Basketball: Open to boys and girls in 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades. The program teaches the basic skills of basketball in a clinic format from January to March on Saturday afternoons.

Mendham Chester Travel Basketball: Open to boys and girls in the 5th through 8th grades. Sign ups are the same as for Patriots Basketball.

Mendham Interchurch H.S. Basketball League: A winter basketball league for Mendham High School students grades 9-12. All players who do not participate in High School basketball may play. This program is sponsored by Mendham High School. Call Mendham High School at 543-2501 for details.

 

Men’s Basketball: Open play from October 1st through April at the Township Middle School, Wednesdays 6:30-9:00pm. Open to Borough and Township Men.  For information on men's basketball contact Bob Sacks at 543--6082 or the Township Department of Recreation.

 

Ice Hockey: The program includes boys and girls ages 6-17. The season runs October through March at the Mennen Arena and practice is at the Chimney Rock and Bridgewater Sports arenas. Contact: Steve Carr 543-6776 or Wendy Gizzi, 543-9622.

 

Mendham Township Ski and Snowboard Club: This program is sponsored by Mendham Township Department of Recreation. The Club is open to all levels of skiing and sponsors 2 ski trips to the Jack Frost Ski Resort in the Poconos. The trips are geared for grades 4 and up, including high school and their families, however, all residents of the Township and Borough are welcome. An overnight weekend trip is also being planned for the older children. There are presently over 80 members in our Ski Club. We are welcoming new volunteers! Mendham Borough Ski Club: This club will take 5 trips to ski resorts in the Pocono Mountains, including Camelback in Tannersville, Pa. All trips are on Sundays leaving from the Mountainview School parking lot. Price will include charter bus and lift tickets. Rentals and lessons available. Trips are limited to young people and adults (6th grade and up.) There are presently 45 members. Sign-ups can be made through the Borough Recreation Office, 543-2610.

 

Wrestling: The Twin Boro Wrestling program is open to children from the Mendhams and Chester grades K-8, who seek the fun and challenge of this character building sport. During last season’s tournaments, the Patriots won 43 individual medals. Practice is from 6:00-7:30 pm in the Mendham High School Field House from December through February Contact: Tom Guthrie 543-6523 or James Button 543-2193.

 

Rollerhockey: The program is for ages 5-16. Practices and games are held at Instant Replay in Morristown. For more information, contact Russ Herman 543-9102.

 


SPRING PROGRAMS

 


Mendham Township Little League (Baseball and Girls Softball):

Baseball: Games are played April through the end of June on fields in the Borough and Township. There is a baseball clinic and evaluation for all players. All star competition begins in July. The league teams range from Tee Ball to Senior Babe Ruth involving children from 5 to 18 years of age. A summer camp is offered in July. Pick up games are available during July and August. Girl’s Softball: This program is open to girls from ages 5 -14. Practice begins late March and games begin late April until June. Skill building and recreation are the main objectives. All star competion begins in July.  Contact: Lucy Monahan 543-2495

 

Women’s Softball: For women 20 years or older. The Borough and Township have their own teams. They play neighboring towns on Tuesday nights at 6:30pm May through July. Home fields are at the Community Club and the Township Middle School. Contact: Linda Coutts Snyder 993-9130.

 

Men’s Softball: The Mendham’s Men’s 36 and over Softball League plays late Sunday mornings at the Brookside Field and Borough Park, from late April through June. Play is open to Borough and Township residents. Call by early April to join a team. Contact: Daryl Brewster 543-0512 or the Township Department of Recreation.

 

Pastime Baseball: The Pastime Club sponsors a semi-professional baseball team, the Pastime Athletics in the Morris County Major League. They were League Champions over the 91-93 seasons and Regular season champions in the 1994 season. Men 18 and over are welcome to tryout. Games are played May-July. The team plays their home games on Pastime Field located at the end of Valley Way. Contact: Bernie DeCristofaro 691-1069.

 

Track and Field: For children ages 7-15 (not in high school) The season goes from Mid-March to early June. Children practice during the week at Mendham H.S. and compete on Sundays in the Lakeland Jr. Track and Field League. This was a new program in 1999. Contact: Township Department of Recreation.

 

Lacrosse: Chester P.A.A. Lacrosse Club is open to both boys and girls in Mendham and Chester in grades 4-8. The season begins in March and ends in June. Home games are at the Black River Middle School field on North Road in Chester. Most games are played on weekends, with practice during the week. Equipment other than sticks is provided by the P.A.A. * This program is a combination sport clinic to introduce the kids to the sports of soccer, basketball and baseball. All materials are sized for children this age. Cost includes T-shirt for all, and a ball for minihawk and basketball players, a stick for rollerhockey players and a hat for golfers. Catching/Pitching Clinic: August 6th. Cost $15.00. For more information, contact Mendham Borough.

 

Soccer Camp: Soccer Vision Camp comes to the West Field in Mendham in mid to late August. There are half day and full day options, and a Munchkin Program for pre-school children. Applications must be in by June 30th. The camp is sponsored by Mendham Soccer Club. For more information contact the Soccer Club hotline at 543-1991.

 

Mendhams Day Camp: July 3rd-August 11th, 9:00am to 12:30pm., Monday - Friday. Mendham Day Camp, held at the Borough Park, is for children going into Kindergarten through 6th grade. Daily activities include arts and crafts, sports, games and special events. A snack is also provided. On scheduled days, children going into grades 3-6 have the opportunity to attend camp at Brookside Beach.  Call the Mendham Borough Department of Recreation (543-2610) for more information.

USTA Tennis Clinic and Jr. Traveling Team: July 6th-July 30th. Ages 8-18. Cost is $50.00 for lessons and $65.00 to join the team. Sign up includes t-shirt. Contact: Barbara McLoughlin, 543-4596 or Didi Sharkey, 543-7386.


FUN IN THE SUN AT BROOKSIDE BEACH

Become a member of the Brookside Beach, located at the Township Elementary School on West Main Street in Brookside. The beach offers fun for the entire family, including such activities as swim lessons, story hours, arts and crafts, organized by an Activities Director, a concession stand, and swim team. Other special activities are scheduled throughout the summer (see the beach calendar). To become a member of the beach, or to sign up for swim lessons or swim team, contact the Department of Recreation.

Swim Lessons are open to children age 4 and up. We offer beginner I, beginner II, intermediate and 4 stroke clinics.  For information contact the Department of Recreation at 543-7301.

Swim Team is open to children 5 and up. The team participates in the North Jersey Regional Lake League. Team practices are held every day either morning or afternoon. FALL PROGRAMS

 


Flag Football: The Mendhams' Men 36 and over flag football league plays late Sunday mornings at the Borough Park from September to November.  Play is open to all local residents. Call by early September to join a team. For information contact the Department of Recreation at 543-7301.

 

Football: Twin Boro Bears- This program is open to children grades K-8, from the Mendhams and Chester. The sign ups are April through August and practices begin the 1st week of August at Mendham High School.  The league ranges from the instructional level K-2nd grade (no contact) to Varsity Level (8th grade). Cheerleading: Twin Boro Bears - Sign up in February. Tryouts for the Twin Boro Bears cheerleading squads take place in early spring (April and May). Tryouts are open to all girls in the Mendhams and Chester who will be entering 1st-8th grade in the fall. Several training dates are scheduled prior to the tryout in order to familiarize the girls with the cheers. Contact: Leslie Rosen 908-719-3195.

 

Adult Soccer: Adult team for players over 30 years of age. The team competes in the Premier Division of Adult Soccer. For more information contact Augie Celluti 543-2941.

 

Youth Soccer: The Mendham Soccer Club’s program is open to children from ages 5-14. A coed Kindergarten program is offered to the 5 year olds which teaches them the basic skills and lets them play short games in a fun, no pressure setting. From ages 6 to 14, teams are separate for boys and girls, and are formed in divisions that span 2 years of age. Intramural games are played on the weekends in the fall, and practices are held some week nights. For players ages 8 to 15 wishing to pursue more extensive play, tryouts are held each spring for the following years traveling soccer teams. Traveling players must commit to both Fall and Spring seasons. Games are played on weekends, usually Sundays with several weeknight practices and perhaps a Saturday practice.
