Map of Patriot's Path
The Borough and Township Environmental Commissions have been involved in the past several years in efforts to complete the Mendham areas portion of Patriot's Path. The path is a hiking trail which, when completed, will extend from East Hanover through Morristown and the Mendhams and end in Chester. Some sections of the path allow horseback riding and/or bicycles.
The Borough portion of the path follows the river from the western Borough boundary at Ironia Road to Mountain Avenue. From Mountain Avenue to Knollwood Drive the path continues as a hiking trail for about a half mile along the railroad right-of-way. Between Knollwood Drive and the eastern boundary on Cold Hill Road, the path has been completed through the Mendham Commons.
In the historic Ralston District to the west of the Borough, the trail follows the Schiff-to-Mount Paul-Greenway. This is a corridor of protected land for hikers and wildlife. Its hiking and equestrian trails, including Patriot's Path, connect approximately 340 acres of the Schiff Nature Preserve with the Ralston Recreation and Natural Area, Roxiticus Reserve, Burnett Brook National Areas and Mount Paul Memorial County Park.
The Mendham Township portion of the path resumes opposite the Holly Manor Nursing Home on Cold Hill Road. Proceeding east, a hiking trail follows the railroad right-of-way past the elementary school and police station to Cherry Lane. The trail continues east from Cherry Lane, across Tingley Road to Lewis Morris Park, paralleling the Whippany River. A side trail accesses Dismal Harmony Natural Area via East Main Street. |
